Finally, Zendaya has once again become a fashion force on Instagram. The actor wears a white t-shirt and an always trendy itty-bitty plaid vest. For a va-va-voom effect, she shot a chic little moment that ended up making a big impact. In her Brooklyn studio, designer Sara Sakanaka keeps a small drawstring bag her grandmother made for her decades ago. Sewn from scrap fabric, the striped bag is one of Sakanaka’s oldest keepsakes, an heirloom that represents an age-old philosophy. “My mother used to tell me this story. It’s about how if we treat things with love and care for a hundred years, they can gain souls,” she shares as she pours each of us a cup of Mugicha, a kind of dessert. Japanese barley tea that she drank while growing up. We meet at her studio on a gray Tuesday morning, where a separate silk collection, each made from recycled Japanese kimonos, hangs neatly. On the shelves, piles of rags were folded up waiting for her to sew them into something new, just like her grandmother’s hobby used to do. “There is the whole idea that objects have life,” she said. “I like to see every work as an object taken for granted in that way.”
It makes sense that Sakanaka would name its own mark as Considered Object. The 39-year-old launched her line — a collection of jackets, skirts and shirts crafted entirely from recycled Japanese kimono and textiles — just two years ago. She shared: “I never had a dream of starting a business. “I enjoy working towards someone else’s vision. But at some point, there’s a part of you that wants to discover what you mean. It took me a while to figure that out.” Sakanaka has a lot to say. With 20 years of experience, she has developed a design philosophy of her own. “I’m not interested in buying new materials or making machines,” she says, showing me the intricate, hand-stitched tinsel of a classic summer kimono. As she points out its cotton lining and hand-painted crests (her paternal and maternal family crests are tattooed on each of her arms), it’s clear that she doesn’t just sew. clothes; She is stitching ancient stories into contemporary clothes. “After years of working at different fashion brands, I realized that you can get stuck in this hamster wheel. What has always grounded me is the question, ‘how can I not only find real meaning in these things, but how can I bring connection through these pieces?’ ”
A FIT graduate, the apparel designer previously worked for the fashion label Imitation of Christ, the luxury line Ports 1961, the custom women’s clothing collection Honor, and the Japanese fashion house Foxey. In 2020, after nearly 4 years of commuting between New York and Japan for work, she felt she was ready for something new. “I started to wonder how I could stay mentally, physically and creatively. I was exhausted.” She talks to me. Around that time, her grandmother, who gave her the collage drawstring bag and taught her how to sew, passed away. “It was during the pandemic, so I couldn’t go to her funeral in Japan. I previously inherited her kimono collection and rediscovered them in the meantime. I had completely forgotten about them, but learning about them became part of my grieving process. Having those things made me feel close to her,” recalls Sakanaka.
