Two titans of fashion are sitting in a showroom, pouring tiny cans of ginger ale into Greek coffee cups. You might not know their names, but their influence on American fashion is big. In one corner, we have Stella Ishii, the owner of The News showroom and designer of 6397. Ishii is a cult icon for her laid-back style and optimistic personality, but she’s also the person responsible for first introducing America to Martin Margiela and Vivienne Westwood when she worked for another showroom, Staff International. In the other is Brendon Babenzien, the founder and creative director of Noah and former design director of Supreme. This meeting of the fashion minds isn’t taking place at a runway show or cocktail-party-cum-dinner, but in a fluorescent-lit room with an oil painting of President Barack Obama hanging nearby. The occasion? Ishii and Babenzien are debuting the first of what could wind up being a myriad of collaborations. Together, they’ve created graphic tees with the names of Shane MacGowan of The Pogues and Robert Smith of The Cure on front that will retail at $95 at Noah’s New York City store, with all proceeds being donated to the ACLU. The tees will have an informal party tonight at Noah’s store, where Babenzien has cleared out all his product, giving Ishii free rein of the space. For the next two weeks, 6397’s womenswear will continue to hang at Noah; think of it as a trial run for what a 6397 brick-and-mortar store could be.

Noah x 6397 will celebrate its collaborative shirts at Noah, 195 Mulberry Street, New York City, tonight from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. 6397’s pop-up will remain open until February 27. Since she began her tenure at Dior and delivered the famous “We Should All Be Feminists” T-shirt, Maria Grazia Chiuri has often infused her work with a politically tinged message. In the past, these meditations on female power have added gravitas to Chiuri’s collections, but for Spring 2018, it served as a more concrete starting point. To open the show, Sasha Pivovarova went down the runway in a Breton-striped shirt that read Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists?, a direct reference to historian Linda Nochlin’s 1971 essay on patriarchy’s lasting effect on art.

As for what I wore the day after my Hanes T-shirt purchase? I didn’t have to think hard about it: A pair of large flares, heeled sandals, and of course, my Hanes white tee, knotted in the front with the sleeves double-rolled. When I came into the office, one of my coworkers grabbed the fabric and complimented the feel, while another remarked she liked the folding crease down the middle. Better yet? I was able to happily wear the remaining three white shirts for the rest of the week—and I didn’t even have to do laundry. Who knew? Happiness, and classic style, comes in plastic-wrapped four (or six, or eight) packs, too.
