What does Emma Chamberlain do with 24 hours to spare while in Copenhagen, Denmark? Lucky for us, she calls Vogue up. We recently spent an eventful day tagging along with the star while she was in town for the Ganni show at Copenhagen Fashion Week. In the new video, Chamberlain took us along for some sightseeing, shopping, coffee tasting, and fittings before the big fashion show. Chamberlain’s day began bright and early at 8 a.m., where she greeted Vogue at her hotel room. She reflected on it being her first in Copenhagen (and at Copenhagen fashion week). “I love this city, it’s so cool,” Chamberlain says. “It reminds me of the East Coast a little bit. I used to go to Maine every summer, and it really reminds me of Maine being on the waterfront.” After slipping into Ganni’s colorful sweater vest, it was time to head out the door and to hop on a quick bike ride to Jerome’s Vintage, for a bit of morning shopping. “I really shouldn’t buy anything today, because I only brought a carry-on,” Chamberlain says as she browses the designer pieces.
I can’t lie and say I didn’t hesitate to wear them. A few weeks before the dresses arrived, I attempted to wear a vintage Missoni dress with a cute little matching cardigan that I bought from a vintage shop in Brooklyn. I thought it looked great and that I had finally kicked my no-dress policy. But the whole time I wore it, I couldn’t understand why everyone was looking at me. Was I paranoid? Maybe I just looked really amazing… Not quite. I got to the office and immediately my coworker noted that she could see everything through my dress. Mind you, I was wearing a thong and no bra. I gave all of Brooklyn and lower Manhattan a show that they didn’t ask for. Finally one morning when the weather forecast said New York would hit the 90s, I decided to put on the green slip dress. Not bad! I paired it with some thrifted white Tom Ford-era Gucci kitten heels and was on my way. It was certainly saucy. My body was outlined, but the trick here was that it went past the knee. I felt vaguely more covered. It also helped that it wasn’t see-through. Some can rock an itty-bitty strapless piece with a pair of vertiginous heels. Mazel tov! I applaud them and I really wish I could wear that, too. But for me, something’s got to balance the fact that I am exposed. For me, that is length. The piece can be as tight as it wants, but I need coverage. My solution is a slip dress that goes beyond the knee. From there? My world is my chic, comfortable, and very breathable oyster.
My aversion became an issue during this summer’s heatwave. (Don’t ask me about shorts: I won’t wear them either unless I’m working out.) Soaring temperatures make it impossible for me to wear my traditional pants. In years before, I’d withstand the heat in a tank top and a pair of black Wrangler Wranchers, which I’ve described as “100% woven polyester but feels more like indestructible Kevlar.” I wore them on a date one particularly hot day; by the time I got to our meeting place, I was coated in sweat. I couldn’t take these scorchers anymore. One day, while browsing Shop Real Life As Liv by Olivia Haroutounian, I saw two slip dresses. One was a green and lace-trimmed, and the other was a yellow-cream silk version that has patchwork embroidery at the bust. Each hit below the knee. Haroutounian modeled both of them and looked plucked from some pre-Raphaelite painting. I messaged her about them and within a week, they were mine.
